sleeping in the same room

Hi guys,

My girls are now 16months old and I would like to move them into the same bedroom. It would be dead easy if they slept through the night (as the text books say) but unfortunately mine don't and they wake up at different times throughout the night. I can't be the only one with this problem, anyone out there got any advice?

At the moment one sleeps in our room and the other in the room next door, we are having another baby so I need to move the twins into the same room making space for a cot in our room. Any tips will be gladly received.

Thanks.

Re: sleeping in the same room

Poor you!  I had a similar situation (although not as tough, I have to say)  I had one that slep through, and the other who didn't.  We started by putting the 'easy' baby in another room, and keeping the 'difficult' one in with us.  After a while, my mum came up with the brilliant idea of keeping the 'easy' one in with us!  It was v clever, coz it took us a little longer to get to him and sometimes he settled on his own!  And it also allowed us to do controlled crying, which worked very well for us.

Even if they wake at different times, do you know that they'll wake each other up?  Is it worth sticking them in together & trying?  Or, if they do wake each other, then maybe that will start to synchronise them, making life a little easier for you.  We synced them up from pretty early on, ie when one woke, we woke the other.

From my own experiences, and talking to others, I have decided that you basically just have to keep trying different things (even if they didn't work when you tried them before, sometimes it's worth trying again)

I hope some/any of that is useful.  Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Re: sleeping in the same room

I agree with Pauline, try them in the same room.  One of ours can be screaming her head off, and the other one will just sleep straight through.  Whether this is because they have been used to it from day one, I'm not sure, but they do seem to have the ability to "tune" the other one's cries out.

We wake at the mearest sound from either of them anyway, so we control cry first seeing if they settle themselves, and if that fails, or if it's at a time when the other one is likely to be woken by the noise, (say when it's early morning), we will go in and tend to them.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

Re: sleeping in the same room

Thanks guys,

Glad to see that I am not the only one in this positions.

I'll just have to move them into the same room and see what happens. We haven't got the space to keep them in separate rooms long term so I guess it will have to work one way or another.

Good luck with it, Yogita!  Keep in touch - we'll have plenty more suggestions if that one doesn't work, no doubt!

Re: sleeping in the same room

AND FINALLY........

Thanks guys for your advice, I talked to a few people about this problem and the general consensus was to just do it.

What I did was to use controlled crying to get them to sleep in separate rooms, moved them into the same room and then had to use controlled crying again to get them to sleep in the same room although it wasn't as hard second time round. Contorolled crying is one of the hardest things to tolerate, but it is best to to stick with it because the results are priceless. There are many books available on the subject.

They have now been sleeping in the same room for about 4 weeks and things are a lot easier. They sleep through most nights and one crying doesn't always wake the other one up. It can still be a nightmare sometimes but most of the time it's fine.

Good luck to anyone else attempting it.

Re: sleeping in the same room

Hi again Yogita

Have you tried?  Simply doing it, I mean?  At that age, maybe you could talk them through it a little bit.  I mean, you don't know til you try.

Do you do a formal bedtime, with a routine?  If so, you could adapt it a bit.

Or let them fall asleep in different rooms and then move the one in your room across to her sister's room, once she's asleep?

You don't know for sure that they'll wake each other up in the night.  It's been a while so things might have changed - who knows?  And if they do, then maybe when one wakes the other, they'll fall into a routine of getting up together in the night?

It's crap that they're still waking up - do you give them milk?

Re: sleeping in the same room

Hi Pauline,

Sorry, maybe my last post wasn't clear, I was just letting everyone know that I have succeeded in moving them into the same room. They do wake each other up but it is more manageable now. I do have a loose bedtime routine and it works fine, however if they cry I just leave them to it until they fall asleep, which is normally only around 5 minutes.

If they do wake up at night then it is usually if they haven't eaten properly the evening before or they are ill and I know you're not supposed to, but I do give them milk. It is easier than having to deal with screaming in the middle of the night. On a positive note this is becoming less frequent.

The only reason I made that post was to let the forum know my experience of moving them into the same room and that there is light at the end of the tunnel even though you may find it tough at the beginning.

Thanks again for your advice.

regards,

Yogita.

Snigger.  I think something went wrong with the site!  I clicked on 'Posts since my last visit' and it showed your original post - and I thought you were looking for some more advice!

Glad things are better now.  How's that bump doing?  Must be due soon...?
